ACDF Surgery Recovery Update

Today I am 70 days post op from ACDF C3-7 Surgery on Sept 25th 2020; and I also had an appointment with the surgeon (Nurse Practitioner actually) to see how I’m doing.

They took a couple of x-rays of my neck and said I’m doing well. The only issue I’m having is muscle pain/tightness/spasms on the right side of my neck, both shoulders, and between my shoulder blades. This is expected she said, and will ease in time. At the 6 months post op time frame I’ll be able to do some physical therapy to help with any of those issues, if they remain. Until then, she suggested that I up my dose of the muscle relaxer to 2 a day. I take one occasionally at night before bed, but not during the day due to the dizziness and drowsiness it causes. She suggested that on days I can afford to lounge around, if the muscles are hurting, to take a daytime dose of the muscle relaxer, instead of taking just Tylenol. There’s not many days around here where one can ‘lounge’ around, but I will make time and try one of the relaxers during the day to see what happens, and how it makes me feel.

I am still under some limitations: No lifting more than 5 lbs. , no strenuous exercises, walking for exercise, no sudden head movements, still have to wear the Stim Cell magnetic therapy ‘necklace’ 4 hours a day for next 12-18 months.

At my last appointment, she said I needed to be off of my RA meds (Enbrel & Methotrexate) for 3 months. BUT she didn’t specify (and I forgot to ask) if that was from the time I stopped the medication before surgery or from the surgery date. I asked today about that, and it is indeed 3 months from the date I had surgery. Sooooo, that means on December 25th I will be able to begin my meds and it can’t come soon enough. The past week or so my hands have really been feeling it, and my ankles too. Hopefully the next 3 weeks will fly by and the flaring will not get any worse. The medicine combination of Enbrel and Methotrexate works well, I expect relief within a couple of weeks starting back on the medication. Having been off my meds since Aug 31 for Methotrexate and Sept 3 for Enbrel, I’m surprised my hands aren’t in worse condition. That’s a LONG time to be without both of those medicines. BUT it’s important for the healing process of my neck to be off of those meds and let my immune system do its work; the downside to that is that it makes the RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) flare. I can bear it. I want my neck to heal properly.

Thanks for reading and being interested in my recovery. I appreciate your time. Next update in 3 months after my next appointment!

ACDF Surgery Recovery Update

Today is 60 days since I had my surgery.

November 6 I began to wean myself off of the brace/collar and was totally done on November 15th. No brace anymore!! I was also given permission to drive again!

Living without the brace…my neck is a little stiff still, and range of motion is limited. I have to be very careful, no sudden movements, no strenuous activities, etc.,. I am doing the daily 4 hour Stim Cell magnetic therapy, it’s become part of my morning routine ~If you’d like to learn more about the device and how the therapy works, check it out here: https://www.orthofix.com/ifus/cervical-stim/

Shampooing my hair is still needing to be done in a gingerly fashion, I’m looking forward to filming shampoo videos again, but they will have to be done in a tub; the weight of my mane entirely wet is too much for my neck to bear at this point. In time, in time…. I’m a patient woman, I can wait….

I have virtually NO pain, other than an occasional headache, and muscle spasms. My old neck pain is gone, and I can’t tell you how wonderful that is! I feel so good! I feel like I can do MORE than the limitations they’ve put on me, but I don’t want to go against Dr.’s orders. That means no lifting over 5 lbs, no overhead reaching ( I do this sometimes, oops) and no strenuous activities. Unlimited walking and stair climbing privileges.

The incision scar looks great. I have obtained some medical honey to help with the healing and scarring, hopefully it will fade soon and be less obvious. But you know what? if it doesn’t I’m fine with it. It’s not that bad, really. Will post pics in next update.

I have another appointment December 3rd with the surgeon and will have more to report then.
Thanks for reading, and being concerned about me. I appreciate you. xoxox

Displaying, Combing, & Bunning Up My Dirty Hair

My hair is in great need of a shampoo, or so I thought… What do you think? Does my hair look dirty to you in this video? I drop a messy bun, display my mane, comb it, display it from behind and shake my ass, I can’t help it! It’s too late in the day to shampoo it, so I bun it back up until tomorrow….

Masturbating While My Hair Is Drying

I have just gotten out of the shower and am laying on the bed with my hair spread out/beside me…taking a break from the day and resting my neck from the heaviness of the wet hair during the shampooing. Hmmm…while I’m laying here resting and playing around on SnapChat..I could buzz out a few orgasms with my Best Birthday Present Ever wand vibrator…Using a sparkly filter that I love, I grab the vibrator and keep the focus on my face so you can see just how much I’m enjoying this pleasurable self love.¬†

My Hair During ACDF Surgery Recovery

Today is day 40 post op.

My hair is heel length; I knew that having to wear a brace would bring challenges regarding my hair. I started out with Braided Leia Buns ( per dr’s request you remember ) made from 4 braids. Those 4 braids, I changed to two braids about a week post op. At 20 days post op I ‘shampooed’ my hair. By that I mean that I lathered up my head and let the suds rinse down the twin braids. It went ok, and my hair was clean. It took the braids a few days to dry, but my hair was clean and I was happy with that.

The next style I tried with my hair was a single braid, I could really feel the full weight of my hair on my new neck. Man, it is heavy! I decided to leave it in, the muscles need to get used to it again. The next day I decided to shampoo with the single braid in. I draped it over my shoulder, it was easy to maneuver. But Um …. not the best idea. It was really heavy. Live and learn …

On Oct 29, 35 days post op, I was about to shower and I decided I’d had enough and that I needed to feel totally clean, with a normal shampooing with my hair completely down and loose! OMG it felt wonderful. I protected my neck from the weight by draping it over my shoulder, never letting it hang on it’s own while totally saturated. I felt like a new woman, I swear. It was a beautiful day that day, I sat out in the sun several times, letting it kiss my silk, helping it dry.

During these past 40 days, having to leave it in the braid(s) ~ only redoing the braids every few days due to me not being able to raise my arms; I need help~ the braid(s) are hanging down, ‘blowing out’ and the velcro on my neck braces has really been an issue. My hair has suffered some breakage and damage from all this. I’m able to start weaning off the brace beginning November 6, and by Nov 15th will be brace free! THEN I can begin getting back to normal. I can wear my hair up in my everyday bun, shampoo as usual, and get back in front of the camera again!! And drive, I have surely missed my independance! The first thing I will do for my hair is a good mask/oil treatment and perhaps a dusting trim. It definitely needs some TLC.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate your time.

ACDF Surgery Update

Today I am 30 days post op. I am doing great, I think!

I had an appointment Thursday with the surgeons Nurse Practitioner. They took a couple of xrays of my neck and said everything looks great so far. I was given a CervicalStim Device to wear for 4 hours a day, every day, for the next 12-18 months. I have osteoporosis and this magnetic therapy will help my bones fuse better.

My incision looks great; there was one piece of surgical tape that would not come off on its own, so she took it off for me in the office. In a couple of weeks, I can begin application of scar reducing products, but really, right now, it’s not that visible. I’ll post some pics next update.

The neck brace(s)…On November 6th I can begin to ‘wean’ myself off of it/them. Like this: On Nov. 6 I take the brace off for an hour. Next day, for two hours, next day 4 hours & so on, until I reach 16 hours consecutive awake hours without the brace on. Now THAT was the news I wanted to hear. I am soooo looking forward to getting rid of these braces. It’s wrecking my hair having it in these braids all the time. I am beginning to really despise velcro. ugh.

RA meds… She said they want me off the RA meds for 3 months. I was shocked, but ok…Week of Dec. 3rd will be when I can start back; as long as healing is on schedule. I see the surgeon on Dec. 3rd, I’m sure they will take more xrays and can let me know for sure that day. I’m having some RA ‘twinges’ here and there, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.

Sleeping is up and down…more good night sleeps than not, but the not nights suck lol. I woke up this morning with a bad sinus headache and sore neck. Go figure. It’s gonna happen from time to time, I am taking it one day at a time, literally.

Thanks for taking the time to read.
